About the Institution

Dr.Oommen's HospitalThe Dr. Oommen's Eye Hospital & Microsurgery Centre is situated in the heart of Chengannur town. It is situated at about 800 metres from the Chengannur Railway Station and about 400 metres from the KSRTC Bus station.

This hospital was started in 2013 in response to the non availability of standard eye care in Chengannur. Currently, we have six doctors, working full or part time and about seventeen staff members. We also have our pharmacy, laboratory, inpatient ward, operation theatre and post operative wards.

The Hospital also has a strong community involvement and has conducted many camps, including outreach camps in the community, and specialty camps like Diabetic Retinopathy and Glaucoma camps.

The Hospital is starting courses in Opthalmic Technology and Vision Technician Course from the academic year 2015.These courses are recognized by the CMAI and HSSC.

These courses train students to independently undertake vision screening (eye testing), diagnosis of vision problems, orthoptics, optometric counseling of patients with partial sight, colour blindness & hereditary vision defects, designing & fitting of spectacles, contact lens and low vision aids. The student who completes these courses will be able to perform special investigative procedures, maintain ophthalmic instruments in both the operation theatre as well as in regular practice. They will be able to find employment in Eye Hospitals, General hospitals, Optical establishments and shops and will even be able to start manufacturing units for optical lenses.

Note

After the successful completion of second year examinations, students would undergo six months compulsory Internship. Diploma Certificate would be issued only after the completion of the Internship.

Note

The above subjects would be taught during the first ten months and an examination would be conducted. Two months of internship would follow after the successful completion of the examination.

Rules for Students

  • Registered students must no obtain employment elsewhere in any capacit during their training period.
  • Every ophthalmic technology student is eligible for 15 days of leave per year excluding sick leave and hospital / national holidays per year.
  • Practical work like refraction / retinoscopy and theatre / OPD technique is an important part of the course.Each student is required to have done atleast 50 retinoscopy / refraction under supervision.
  • Each student must submit a practical record book containing information regarding the above procedures, during the practical examination.
  • Students are required to attend a minimum of 80 % of all theory and practical classes.
  • An internship period of 6 months is compulsory after passing all theory and practical examinations.Candidates are eligible to obtain their Diploma only after the completion of the Internship.An internship period of two months is required for Certificate Course after the theoretical period of 10 months.
  • Classes will be from 9 am to 5 pm.This will include theory classes, OPD and lab work, as well as community camps. Attendance is mandatory.
  • Students will be required to wear uniform as directed by the Institution.
  • Ragging is not acceptable behaviour in this institution. According to the law of the land, it is illegal to commit, participate in, abet or propagate "RAGGING". The institution will deal firmly and strictly with all instances of ragging. If any incident / incidents of ragging comes to the notice of the authorities, the concerned student will be expelled from the institution.
  • Students are further expected to be disciplined and follow all the rules and regulations of this Institution.Disciplinary Action including suspension or dismissal is liable to te taken if they commit offences.

Admission Policy

Admission PolicyTraining programmes at Dr. Oommen's Eye Hospital & Microsurgery Centre is open to all persons regardless of gender, caste, religion or creed. All admissions are subject to applicable regulations by the relevant Accreditation Authority / Government.

A total of 10 students will be inducted for the Diploma Course and 5 students will be inducted to the Technician Course.

All information provided in the Application Form should be correct. Any false information or suppression of any factual information would be a disqualification.

Selected candidates must pay the full tuition and other academic fees at the time of admission.

In the event, a selected candidate withdraws from the course voluntarily after registration, tuition and other academic fees that have already been paid will not be refunded under any circumstance. He / She will also have to pay the course fees for the remaining years of study.

The prospectus and application form can be obtained from the office / reception of Dr. Oommen's Eye Hospital & Microsurgery Centre. The cost of the prospectus and application form will be Rs 200, which may be paid in the office.

Eligibility for Admission

Candidates should have passed XII standard or its equivalent examination with science subjects as electives preferably for the Diploma course and X standard for the certificate course.

  • A character and conduct certificate from the head of the higher secondary school or the principal of the college last attended.
  • Mark sheets or grades of each examination passed, duly attested by the Headmaster or Principal.
  • Transfer Certificate from the school or college last attended.
  • Selected candidates must undergo a medical examination conducted by the training centre before admission. Medically unfit candidates will not be allowed to continue the course.
  • Students must sign a declaration that they are willing to abide by the rules of CMAI and those of the training centre, and take part in the routine work by which they if gain adequate knowledge and skill.
  • Receipt of the application form fee.
